With creator and artist organization pushing for fair compensation, the UK’s Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) Commons Select Committee carried out an investigation into the economics of music streaming. Released in July 2021, the Report called for a “complete reset” of the streaming market. In its Response, the Government described the Report as “a key moment for the music industry”. It set out a series of workstreams with the aims of addressing the key music industry issues.
Since then, the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) — which is the civil service part of the DCMS dealing with copyright — has been doing work with industry on a number of issues, most notably on metadata.
Joining us for the 12th iteration of Music Biz’s popular Metadata Summit is Robin Stout the IPO’s Deputy Director of Copyright Policy. Stout will share a broad explanation of the Report’s findings and the subsequent work that has been taking place at the IPO. He’ll discuss possible implications of the findings in the UK and beyond for DSPs and rightsholders alike, as well as provide an indication of future workstreams.
This keynote is part of the Metadata Summit, presented by OpenPlay and SoundExchange & supported by DataArt, DDEX and Verifi Media
